Life insurance in Canada vs Ontario
By Habib Ur Rehman Bhatti, Ontario life insurance advisor
Most people search for life insurance in Canada. We can only quote Ontario. This page explains the difference honestly: why premiums are set province by province, why every figure on this site is an Ontario extract, and what to do if you live somewhere else.
Quick answer
Life insurance is sold and priced province by province in Canada. Each insurer files its own rates for each province, so the same person at the same age can be quoted differently depending on where they live. QuoteCompass publishes a dated extract of Ontario sample rates and its advisor is licensed in Ontario only, so this site can quote Ontario business and nothing else. The sample premiums here are Ontario figures: useful as a directional guide elsewhere, but not a quote for another province. Wherever you live, confirm your own numbers with an advisor licensed in your province, and remember every application is subject to underwriting.

Why life insurance prices differ by province
Canada has no single national price for life insurance. Insurers are regulated federally, but the product is delivered and priced province by province: each carrier files rates for each province it sells in, and those filings can differ in premium level, available products and the health questions asked. Provincial premium taxes and fees also differ, and so does the mix of carriers actively competing in a given market. The practical result is that a $500,000, 20-year term policy quoted at one price in Ontario may be quoted somewhat differently in Alberta or Quebec for the same person. Nobody can quote you accurately for a province they do not hold filed rates for, which is exactly why this site does not try.
Which province can QuoteCompass quote?
Ontario only. Every sample premium on this site comes from a dated extract of Ontario advisor-portal rates covering seven carriers: Empire Life, Equitable, Foresters, iA, Manulife, ivari and Canada Protection Plan. The advisor who operates QuoteCompass is licensed in Ontario, so Ontario is the only province where a policy can actually be placed. We state that plainly rather than implying national coverage, because the alternative is a visitor in another province spending time on numbers that were never theirs to begin with.
What to do if you live outside Ontario
Two things, in order. First, treat our Ontario samples as a directional guide only: they tell you roughly how age, smoking status, coverage amount and term length move a premium, and that spread between carriers is real and large everywhere. Second, get your own numbers from an advisor licensed in your province, because that is the only person who can see the rates actually filed for where you live. Do not rely on an Ontario figure as your quote, and do not buy from anyone who is not licensed where you reside.
Why every rate here says Ontario
Because that is what the data is. The extract is dated, it comes from Ontario advisor portals, and each figure is a sample rather than an offer: your final premium is set when an insurer underwrites you. If you see an Ontario label on a rate table, a calculator result or a guide, it is not a limitation we forgot to remove. It is the scope of the only rate data we hold, and it is stated so that no visitor mistakes a sample for a national price.
The Canada-wide questions, answered on their Ontario pages
Most searches that say Canada are really about a product or a rule rather than a province, and those are answered here already. If you want to know what no-medical coverage is and how it differs from fully underwritten term, the no-medical comparison covers it. If you want to work out how much cover you need, the coverage calculator runs the income, debt and savings math and then shows real sample premiums. If you are pricing cover in your thirties or forties, the age pages show term by term. If you are sorting out who receives the money, or arranging final expense cover for a parent, those guides are linked below. Read them as Ontario illustrations, and confirm your own province's pricing with a local advisor.
Questions
- Is life insurance cheaper in Ontario than in other provinces?
- We cannot answer that honestly, because we do not hold filed rates for any other province and comparing them would be guesswork. What we can say is that province is a much smaller factor than age, smoking status, health history, coverage amount and term length. Those five variables move a premium far more than the province you live in.
- Can I get a quote from QuoteCompass if I do not live in Ontario?
- No. The advisor here is licensed in Ontario only, so Ontario is the only province where a policy can be placed. You are welcome to use the sample rates as a directional guide, but for your own numbers you need an advisor licensed in your province.
- Do these sample rates apply across Canada?
- No. Every figure on this site is an Ontario sample from a dated extract of advisor-portal rates, and every application is subject to underwriting. Treat them as Ontario illustrations rather than national prices.
- Why does this site say Ontario everywhere?
- Because the rate data is Ontario data and the licence is an Ontario licence. Labelling it Ontario is the honest description, not an oversight. A comparison built on a single province's filed rates cannot be presented as a national one.
